Under the Rivers of the Air

Spring Storm CloudsThe Gardens of Annica are situated mid-continent; far from any ocean, yet feeling the energy of three; neither Hill nor Plain, North or South, East or West. The place occupied by Annica on the ground is under a pivot point in the atmosphere above. Use your Mind’s Eye to see the undulating rivers of the Air—the eddies of warm and cold spinning as they drift from East to West.

Sometimes the streams of cold will loop down from the North, bringing an Arctic chill that links us for a few days to those living in places like Chicago and Minneapolis, the plains of North Dakota and the Lakes of Minnesota. Soon however, a warm eddy will muscle its way North, bringing with it balmy breezes from the Gulf. Sometime it even smell like the ocean is just over the hill.

At this moment, I am sitting inside watching the snow fall outside on the Garden. I have every confidence that in a about three days we will be blessed with a few days of warmth and sunshine. I plan to take advantage of the break by adding some layers of compost to the beds in the Kitchen Garden. I will then cover them with blankets of black so that they will more readily absorb the Sun’s rays, warming the beds in preparation for seeding.

The season is turning, we have just passed the day midway between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox (Imbolc, February 1). There is still much of Winter ahead, but the atmospheric ebb and flow will be bringing warmer warm and not-so-cold cold. Time to begin to Awaken from our Sleep.
